On Amazon, Walmart Marketplace, eBay, and Etsy, the platform name alone does not determine your remedy. Check the actual seller, listing-specific return terms, protection eligibility, deadlines, and return-shipping responsibility, then preserve the order and message record.

“Bought on Amazon” or “ordered from Walmart” is not enough information to predict a remedy. A large marketplace can contain inventory sold by the platform, third-party goods fulfilled by the platform, and products shipped and supported entirely by independent sellers. The Sold by and Shipped by lines, the item category, and the terms displayed at checkout usually determine whom to contact first, where a return goes, and who pays for it.
Amazon, Walmart Marketplace, eBay, and Etsy all have a route for platform intervention, but these programs are not four versions of the same insurance policy. They mainly address non-delivery, damage, material mismatch, or a seller’s failure to honor commitments. A simple change of mind generally remains subject to the listing and seller’s return terms.
The order page matters more than the marketplace logo
Amazon orders may be sold by Amazon or by a third party. For eligible orders sold, fulfilled, and serviced by a third-party seller, the A-to-z Guarantee addresses delivery and item condition. Amazon’s instructions generally require the buyer to contact the seller first and wait the applicable period before asking Amazon to intervene. A third-party return may go directly to the seller rather than to an Amazon facility.
Walmart Marketplace sets minimum return standards while allowing category and seller-specific differences. Its current policy says most Marketplace items have a 30-day return period, with shorter periods for categories such as major appliances, certain electronics, and luxury goods. Some eligible purchases can go back to a store; others follow an online shipment path. The Walmart name on the page does not make every third-party item subject to the identical workflow used for Walmart-owned inventory.
eBay displays the seller’s return policy within the transaction, but the Money Back Guarantee can still cover most eligible purchases that never arrive, arrive damaged or faulty, or materially fail to match the listing. A “no returns” policy usually addresses remorse returns; it does not automatically erase protection for an item that was misdescribed. The buyer opens a request from Purchase history and can ask eBay to step in after the seller’s response period.
Etsy leaves cancellation, return, and exchange policies largely to independent shops, which makes custom and handmade purchases especially variable. Purchase Protection offers a refund path for qualifying orders that do not arrive, arrive damaged, differ significantly from the description or photos, or arrive at least seven days after the maximum estimated delivery window. The buyer first sends a Help request. If the problem remains unresolved after 48 hours, the buyer may be able to ask Etsy to intervene. A guest order must be connected to an Etsy account to use that process.
Save a transaction snapshot before paying
For an expensive, used, collectible, custom, or cross-border item, save a PDF or screenshots that include:
- the full title, description, photos, and condition grade;
- seller name, location, rating, and Sold by / Shipped by information;
- delivery estimate, shipping service, and signature requirement;
- return period, restocking fee, return-shipping responsibility, and exclusions;
- model, size, material, accessories, and serial-number details;
- total price, tax, customs language, and payment method.
A listing can change or disappear after checkout. The order confirmation proves a purchase occurred but may not preserve every representation that prompted it. For a custom order, keep the color, engraving, dimensions, and approved design inside marketplace messaging rather than moving the arrangement entirely to private texts or social media.
Non-delivery: distinguish a delay from a bad delivery record
Before the estimated date passes, monitor tracking and carrier alerts. Afterward, use the order’s “item not received” route instead of sending only a general customer-service email. Marketplace clocks often run from the delivery estimate or a formal request. Using the wrong channel can leave a conversation that is hard to connect to the later case.
When tracking says delivered but the parcel is absent, immediately save the tracking page, verify the order address, ask household members or building staff, and check for carrier photos or location details. Do not close a request merely because a seller supplies a tracking number, and do not move the resolution off-platform before the refund is complete.
eBay’s current policy illustrates why dates matter. A non-delivery report opens only after the estimated or actual delivery date has passed and has a limited final filing date. The seller receives a response period, after which the buyer can ask eBay to step in. The transaction page provides the dates applicable to that order; placing them on a calendar is safer than waiting from memory.
Damage or mismatch: show the difference, not just dissatisfaction
At delivery, photograph the outer package, label, seal, and internal packing before documenting every side of the product, identifying labels, serial number, and damage. Useful evidence connects the listing to the item received. “This is bad” is an opinion. “The listing promised a new 256GB model, while this serial number identifies a 128GB unit with a cracked display” describes a verifiable mismatch.
Choose the truthful reason on the order page. Remorse, poor fit, shipping damage, and material misdescription can produce different shipping and protection results. Falsely labeling remorse as damage can undermine the case and may be treated as abuse. If an item appears counterfeit or unsafe, do not resell it; preserve it or dispose of it only as the marketplace directs.
Amazon’s A-to-z guidance distinguishes a damaged, defective, or materially different item from an ordinary return and sets different conditions for seller response, return authorization, and a missing refund. eBay likewise says a qualifying damaged, faulty, or not-as-described purchase may be refundable even if the seller refuses ordinary returns. The common requirement is a traceable case created through the marketplace workflow.
A return remains at risk until the refund posts
Do not independently ship to a different address sent through chat unless the order workflow confirms it. Check the label recipient, parcel limits, insurance, and signature requirements. Photograph the item’s condition, packing, and label before shipment, then retain a dated receipt that shows weight when available.
Refund triggers differ. Walmart says some online Marketplace returns are processed after the carrier scan, while third-party items left at a store may first travel to a Marketplace Return Center. Amazon third-party sellers commonly process after receipt. Other workflows may wait for inspection. The card issuer or payment service may then need additional posting time. Track five separate events: return initiated, first carrier scan, delivery, marketplace refund approval, and credit to the payment account.
Tracking is particularly important for valuable merchandise. If a parcel disappears without an acceptance scan, weight, or delivery confirmation, the platform may be unable to determine whether the buyer completed the return. Avoid simultaneously opening a marketplace claim and a payment chargeback: some programs pause or end their internal process when an outside payment dispute begins.
The practical dividing lines
| Problem | Amazon | Walmart Marketplace | eBay | Etsy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Change of mind | Order and item return terms control | Category, seller, and Marketplace terms control | Seller’s listing policy usually controls | Shop policy usually controls |
| Not received | Contact the third-party seller, then use A-to-z if eligible | Contact through the order, then escalate if unresolved | Open an item-not-received request in Purchase history | Send a Help request, then open a case when eligible |
| Damaged or materially different | Select the accurate reason; A-to-z may apply | Preserve evidence and use the order return/escalation path | Money Back Guarantee may apply despite no ordinary returns | Purchase Protection may cover a qualifying order |
| Return shipping | Depends on reason and order terms | Depends on cause, category, and seller responsibility | Responsibility differs between remorse and misdescription | Shop terms and the case outcome matter |
This table identifies an entry point, not a guaranteed result. Food, digital goods, hazardous materials, hygiene products, major appliances, luxury merchandise, plants, and custom work often have special restrictions.
Cross-border purchases add four questions
Before checkout, determine who pays import charges, which country contains the return address, who bears international return postage, and what happens after refusal of delivery. Shipping an inexpensive item abroad can cost more than the product. A return that crosses a customs border may also need specific documents.
Etsy expressly says that delay or non-receipt caused by the buyer’s refusal to pay customs or import charges due on delivery does not qualify for Purchase Protection. Amazon’s A-to-z page describes remedies an eligible international seller must offer for certain returns. Mandatory consumer rights in another country can exceed marketplace policy, but the answer depends on buyer location, seller location, and transaction terms. A U.S. help page should not be transplanted to every storefront.
Escalate with one clean timeline
Put the order number, promised date, discovery of the problem, first seller contact, response, return scan, and marketplace deadline on one page. Keep material communication within the platform and state the requested outcome—refund, replacement, or return label—in short factual language. If the seller does not resolve the issue during the allowed period, escalate from the original case rather than creating multiple requests.
If the marketplace process ends and a card dispute is still being considered, check the issuer’s deadline and provide the complete record. A chargeback is not a button for extending a missed marketplace deadline and should not duplicate a refund already received. For a large loss, personal injury, identity misuse, or a difficult cross-border conflict, advice from the relevant consumer authority or an attorney may be appropriate.
The public U.S. policies in this article were checked on September 20, 2026. Holiday extensions, category exclusions, and case deadlines change. Reopen the specific order and current official policy both before purchasing and when a problem occurs rather than relying on a search snippet or an old screenshot.
Frequently asked questions
If a return is allowed, does the seller always pay shipping?
No. Responsibility depends on the reason, seller fault, item category, and platform rule. Confirm it before generating a label.
Should I immediately file a payment dispute for a missing cross-border order?
First use the marketplace deadline and escalation process and preserve tracking and messages. Payment disputes have separate conditions and deadlines.
