In short

Identify who bills and manages the subscription, check renewal or trial dates, and cancel through the official route with saved confirmation. Verify future renewal, access ending, and refunds separately. Review later statements; deleting an app or removing a card is not proof the agreement ended.

Cancellation can mean stopping the next charge, ending access immediately, or requesting money already paid. A button labeled “cancel” does not establish that all three happen together.

This guide organizes records for general U.S. subscription purchases. Services do not share a universal cancellation route, refund policy, or processing deadline. Industry and state rules can differ. FTC’s subscription guidance explains why ongoing billing and cancellation terms deserve attention.

Locate the actual billing relationship

Find the receipt, statement description, order ID, and login account. An in-app purchase may be managed by an app store or billed directly by a merchant. A marketing email sender is not necessarily the contracting party.

Open the known official website or platform app yourself. Do not log in through an unfamiliar failed-renewal message. If the household has multiple accounts, match the charged subscription before canceling an account that was never paid.

Put the dates and prices in one row

Item Evidence to retain
Service and account Name, redacted account, subscription manager
Current period Start and end, including time zone
Next charge Date, price, taxes, promotional expiry
Cancellation route Official instructions and required steps
Result Confirmation ID, status, access end date
Refund Request, basis, decision, receipt of money

If a trial notice gives a date without a time zone or exact cut-off, ask early. A personal reminder can be earlier than the deadline, but is not evidence of the final cancellation time the contract permits.

Verify three outcomes separately

In a hypothetical annual subscription, the paid period ends December 31 and the customer cancels in October. Confirmation that renewal is off while access continues through December 31 does not also promise a refund for the remaining months.

Read new dates and prices before accepting a pause, downgrade, or retention offer. A three-month pause should not be recorded as permanent cancellation.

Removing a card is also not cancellation evidence. If contractual obligations remain, a failed payment may create another issue. Confirm stopping a payment instruction and ending a service relationship separately.

Save the process and check the result

Keep the relevant terms and account status before submitting. Save dated confirmation and the access end date afterward. For calls or chats, record the representative, case number, and promised next step. Retain necessary evidence without sending unrelated full bank statements.

Review subscription status and later statements covering the original renewal date. If billing continues despite confirmed cancellation, organize charges and confirmation chronologically and request an explanation through official customer service.

Track a billing dispute separately

FTC’s consumer-resolution guidance discusses records and clear requests. For unauthorized or post-cancellation charges, promptly check the relevant payment provider’s dispute procedure and deadlines. Waiting for a merchant reply does not necessarily pause other time limits.

State the precise outcome requested: stop future billing, explain a specific charge, or return a specified amount. A complaint or dispute does not guarantee a refund. Use the contract checklist for related agreements and the AI household-admin workflow for reviewed reminders.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting an app cancel its subscription?

Do not assume so. Use the actual subscription-management channel and save the resulting status and confirmation.

Does cancellation guarantee a refund for unused time?

No. Refunds and stopping future renewals are separate issues governed by the agreement, platform policies, and applicable rules.
