Compare travel insurance against prepaid nonrefundable costs and the medical risks of the actual itinerary. Separate cancellation, interruption, medical care, and evacuation, then verify exclusions, purchase deadlines, and any overlap with existing benefits.

The checkout screen asks whether you want to “protect your trip.” Before accepting, decide what loss you are trying to protect. A refundable hotel, an expensive prepaid tour, and a remote hiking itinerary create different needs. A single headline benefit cannot describe all three.
This checklist is for U.S. consumers comparing travel policies. Destination rules and policy availability vary. Use the actual itinerary and the policy offered for your residence, rather than a generic international comparison table.
Calculate the amount actually at risk
Create a booking ledger with amount paid, refund deadline, refund method, and nonrefundable remainder. An invented trip has $1,200 of nonrefundable flights, a $900 refundable hotel, and a $600 nonrefundable tour. Its initial cancellation exposure is $1,800, not the full $2,700 paid. Recalculate when refund deadlines pass.
Record credits separately from cash refunds. A voucher that expires soon may not serve the same purpose as returned cash. Ask the insurer how credits, supplier refunds, and later recoveries affect a claim.
Separate four coverage questions
NAIC’s travel insurance overview distinguishes insurance from assistance and cancellation waivers. It also discusses exclusions and optional cancel-for-any-reason coverage. The package name alone does not establish what pays.
| Coverage | Comparison question |
|---|---|
| Cancellation | Which listed events permit a claim before departure? |
| Interruption | Which events cover an early return or unused arrangements? |
| Emergency medical | What are the limit, deductible, and payment arrangements? |
| Evacuation | Who authorizes transport and chooses the destination? |
Delay and baggage benefits need their own thresholds, sublimits, and evidence. Do not assume a general medical limit is the evacuation limit or that a delay benefit reimburses every missed booking.
Check deadlines and exclusions first
Before comparing premiums, check age and residence eligibility, destination restrictions, trip length, planned activities, and treatment of existing medical conditions. Ask about purchase windows, any waiver requirements, and the exact cancellation deadline for optional cancel-for-any-reason benefits. Do not infer these from an advertisement.
An activity listed as “hiking” in your itinerary may involve elevation, remoteness, or equipment that matters under the wording. Describe the activity accurately and request a written answer. If the response is unclear, treat that item as unresolved coverage.
Map existing benefits
Review your health plan and credit-card benefit documents. Note geographical limits, required payment methods, covered travelers, claim order, and documentation. Similar benefit names do not guarantee identical protection, and two policies do not imply double reimbursement.
For each quote, save the full wording, insurer, administrator, assistance number, premium, and cancellation rules. FTC travel guidance recommends checking sellers and reading refund terms before paying. Verify contact details independently when a message asks for unexpected payment.
Prepare the claim file before departure
Keep receipts, booking confirmations, policy documents, and a timeline in an accessible folder. Record whom to contact before arranging treatment or transport. After a disruption, retain notices and communications explaining why plans changed; a payment receipt alone may not establish a covered reason.
Use the policy-reading guide for definitions. For itinerary organization, the AI travel-planning workflow shows how to organize options while leaving bookings and verification under your control.

Frequently asked questions
Does trip cancellation cover any change of mind?
Standard cancellation coverage generally depends on listed covered reasons. Optional cancel-for-any-reason terms have separate conditions.
Is travel assistance the same as medical insurance?
No. Help locating services does not by itself promise payment of medical bills.
