Compare umbrella quotes only after matching the required underlying auto and home liability limits. Ask how covered claims attach, who is insured, and whether defense costs reduce the limit. Include any increase in underlying premiums in the annual cost.

A quote for an extra million dollars of liability protection can look simple. The difficult part is determining where the new policy starts and whether the household actually meets its conditions. A small standalone premium can hide the cost of changing several existing policies.
This guide is for U.S. households comparing personal umbrella coverage. It is not a list of insurers ranked by price. Quotes depend on drivers, properties, activities, state, and underwriting. Start with a coverage map, then request prices against that map.
Identify the loss you want to transfer
NAIC explains that umbrella insurance can provide additional liability and legal-defense protection, including some claims beyond primary policies. It does not replace insurance for damage to your own home or vehicle. Coverage still depends on the contract.
Write three realistic scenarios: a serious accident involving a household driver, a guest injury at your home, and an allegation connected to a rental property or outside activity. Ask the agent which policy would respond first, which would respond next, and which exclusion might prevent either from responding. Do not treat an illustration as a coverage promise.
Put quotes on the same basis
| Item | What to request in writing |
|---|---|
| Underlying policies | Required liability limits and acceptable insurers |
| Insured people | Treatment of spouses, resident relatives, and young drivers |
| Properties and vehicles | Homes, rentals, boats, and vehicles that must be listed |
| Defense costs | Whether costs are inside or outside the limit |
| Gaps | When a retained amount or uncovered underlying loss remains yours |
| Exclusions | Business activity, intentional acts, and other excluded exposures |
If a child moves away for study, a home becomes a rental, or a vehicle is added, ask whether the change needs reporting. A policy bought against an old household description may no longer match the exposure you intended to insure.
Calculate the whole-household price
Consider an invented comparison, not a market quote. Policy A costs $240 a year but requires $180 more in underlying premiums. Policy B costs $310 and requires $60 more. The added annual costs are $420 and $370 respectively. That makes B cheaper on this narrow measure, but only if its coverage terms also fit.
Use: added annual cost = umbrella premium + required underlying premium increases − confirmed bundle savings. Do not subtract an advertised discount unless the actual quotes show it. Keep deductible changes separate: accepting more loss yourself is a risk change, not simply a discount.
Ask questions before accepting
Send each agent the same scenario sheet and request the form number, endorsements, effective date, liability limit, and underlying requirements. Ask what happens if an underlying policy lapses or carries an insufficient limit. Do not assume the umbrella fills the resulting gap.
Save the written answers alongside the declarations and contract. Review again after a move, a new driver, a rental purchase, or a substantial change in activities. If the agent cannot explain how a scenario is treated, request clarification from underwriting before paying.
Read the auto insurance comparison guide and homeowners coverage guide first. Use the policy-reading checklist when matching the final documents to the quote.

Frequently asked questions
Does umbrella insurance repair my own car?
It is liability coverage, not a substitute for coverage of damage to your own vehicle.
Should I compare umbrella premiums alone?
No. Include changes to required underlying insurance and compare equivalent contract terms.
